Book Review of ‘Space’

space-book.jpg

Book Title: Space

Author: Will Osborne and Mary Pope Osborne

Task: 6. Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not? (To be done after completion of a book.)

(Different from the books what I read so far, I decided to read a nonfiction book about ‘Space’.)

I would DEFINITELY recommend the book, Space to anybody because the facts inside the book are described with easy explanations. For example, when the authors described Solar System, they said,

“Our part of space is called our Solar System. Our solar system is the sun and everything that travels around it.” instead of saying,

“Solar system is the sun with the celestial bodies that revolve around it in its gravitational field.”

Beside that, there are also more elements that make the book interesting.

They are small tags next to the context in each page that explain the definitions of important vocabularies which help the readers to understand the text better.  Also, the diagrams in the book give a better understanding of the text.

Before reading this book, I thought space was a boring place with bunch of stars and planets. However, after reading this book, I discovered that Space is an amazing place with unbelievable, and incredible facts. I also learned so many facts about space that are both interesting, and important  such as

“One year in Saturn equals 30 years on Earth” or “Because there’s no wind or rain on the moon, footprints in the moon’s dust will last forever.” or “The stars that we can see are 2000 and stars in the universe are 10,000,000,000,000,000,000,000″and a lot more.

I think Space is a book that suits for any age since it consists stories that are easy to understand but important!

Afterall, who would want to miss a book that is full of fun facts, photos, illustrations, definitions and a lot more! (I wouldn’t!)

Book Title: The Skin I’m In

Author: Sharon G. Flake

3. Select 1-2 passage/quotes from the test that hold meaning for you. Explain why you chose the specific passages/quotes, including any significance to the plot, themes, or messages of the book.

Passages:

p41; I didn’t used to mind being this color. Then kids started teasing about it.  Making me feel like something was wrong with how I look. And when Daddy passed away, that just made things worse.

-I chose this passage because this book is mainly about a girl struggling at school because of her skin color and overcoming it. The passages shows her questioning the world WHY she has to be the one who’s being bullied.  I think this passage explains the main cause of this book very well.

p73; “The more she sewed them clothes, the better she got. She started picking up after herself. Got a job and all. No, ain’t nothing good come from loving somebody so much you can’t live without ‘em,” I say. “No good at all.”

-Maleeka said this quote in class while they were talking about the book, Romeo and Juliet. Some said that dying over somebody is romantic. However, Maleeka’s opinion was different. She knew the real consequences of it by seeing her momma suffering because of her Daddy’s death.

I really like this book because the voice of Maleeka is honest, powerful, and readers-dragging. Also, the story about her is pure, and realistic.

(This is the URL of it)

As you practice typing on this website, you’ll find yourself enjoying to type! (cuz that’s what I did…haha :))

And see how fast you could type. The speed is defined as wpm, words per minute, and I got 87 just now!!

My Atom, Oxygen

1 First, a little bit about my atom….

In science, we were supposed to pick an element from the periodic table and make a model of it. The element I chose was oxygen, which has 8 neutrons, 8 protons, and 8 electrons. It’s identified with an “O” symbol on periodic table of elements.

Oxygen is an odorless, colorless, and tasteless gas-ish element on earth trapped by atmosphere. Without oxygen, all living creatures will die within few minutes.

2 Some factual/interesting information about your atom

An interesting fact about oxygen is that it is explosive in its pure form with a little hydrogen and a flammable material. And there was an accident related to it. There was a guy in a hospital who took his oxygen mask off for a quick cigarette, under his sheet it filled with oxygen then the cigarette ignited it, and caused an explosion. (scary..huh?!)

3 One thing I learned was…

Through this project, I learned many things. I learned how the atoms of different elements look like, what the symbols and numbers on the periodic table represented and a lot more. But most important, learning how to plan and thinking through the steps were the biggest thing I learned. I think it’ll help me in the future when I do some kind of assignment.

4 The biggest challenge for me on this project was ..

On this project, the biggest challenge for me was making the wire (orbit) around the nucleus stay in shape. Since my wire was very thick and hard to bend, it was difficult for me to make it round and stay without falling apart. But Mr.O adjusted my model by make a hook on the wire and connecting it with the other wire.(He took about 10 minute making it but I took like hours and hours to connect it and it still didn’t work.)

5 The easiest part was…..

Since I had a challenging part, I also had an easy part. The easiest part for me was making the neutrons, protons, and electrons. I used clay to represent them and it was even fun making it…

6 I seeked help/advice from my parents by..I sought help and advice from my mom when I had to find the proper materials for the atom. She also helped me when I was struggling with connecting the wires.7 How would you rate yourself (on a scale of 1-10) on the idea of the quote below? Explain

“This project was more about planning, thinking through things well, efficiency and organization - not about building or being an expert on the atom.”

I would rate myself as a 9.0 on it because I understood the concept of this project well, but couldn’t act it out as well as I planned.

8 What new lessons will you consider in preparation for your next project? What will you continue to do well and what will you make an effort to change? How does the academic goal set with your parents play a part in this final answer?

What I would do well on new lessons is planning and thinking about how I’m going to act it out. But the problem is, I have to work on acting it out and finish all the requirements. So that’s what I have to work hard on. I will complete my weakness by paying attention to what I’m doing and try to follow my plan.

Book Title: Into the Land Of the Unicorns

Author: Bruce Coville

6. Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or Why not?

-In my opinion, Into The Land Of The Unicorns could be recommended to anyone, not only my friends. It drags the reader into the story with its wonderful plot and characters.

What I really liked about this book was the twists and turns involved in the adventure of Cara because they are all unexpected and surprising. Thus, I kept reading and reading. I was eager to know the ending, if Cara would return the amulet to the queen, or if the hunter would capture Cara and the company. Most important, the descriptions that the author made for every scene absorbed me and I could clearly picture the scene.

Furthermore, once you start reading Into The Land Of The Unicorns, you won’t be able to stop because it is filled with so many interesting details. Another thing that would keep the readers reading this book is the mysteries that happen. They make the reader curious about the solutions!

After all, who wouldn’t want to read the book that if full of adventure, twists and turns, and mysteries?
