Window to Soul Sculpture – Artist Statement

The window to soul sculpture wasn’t necessarily hard to do but it was definitely hard to plan and required a lot of thought. I had to create 6 symbols and use 20 words that represented me. As I first started planning it was difficult but as I got more words and created more symbols it started to get easier. I then realized a few key points in creating symbols and choosing words. I should start off with things that I like and my characteristics. Things started to come to my mind really fast and I was on the right track towards creating a beautiful piece of artwork.

In this project I used foam boards to create my 3D symbols. I printed 20 words from my computer and glued them to the symbols. For the color of the symbols I used spray paint. The spray paint really had a special effect on the Symbols. It gives the viewer a feeling where they are confused in whether the black is the background or the white is the background. The confusion leads to curious and interesting thoughts about my sculpture. I used black for the black ground and spray-painted white spots on top to represent the two sides of a person. The white representing the Honest, caring, and ethical side of a person. The black representing the Selfishness, cruel, and mean side of a person.

The passion I had for this project was that I could express myself to everyone in a different way and share thoughts amongst the people that view my painting in a special connection. The main theme for my sculpture is that everybody has 2 sides, a good and bad side, nobody is perfect. Perfect defines flawless and that is something that no human being can achieve.

Artist’s Statement

1. What is an artist’s statement? (2 points)
2. What is the purpose of an artist’s statement? (2 points)
3. How long should the artist’s statement be? (2 points)
4. Who will be the intended audience of your artist’s statement? (2 points)
5. What are five strategies artists can use to begin the process of writing an artist’s statement? (5 points)
6. What is the best way for you to start your Window to the Soul Sculpture artist’s statement? (2 points)

1. An artist’s statement is a document written for a piece of artwork an artist has done.
2. An artist’s statement’s purpose is to describe the artist’s meaning for a piece of artwork, the creative process of creating the artwork, the passion of the aritst, the philosophy or possibly moral, and the vision of the artwork.
3. Some say that 100 words to a page of text is good enough. Depends what kind of person you are. As long as the statement expresses yourself, is unique, and makes you happy it qualifies as an artist statement. The artist statement should be in a 3 paragragh format.
4. The intended audiences of my artwork are casual browsers and other artists.
5. Create an enviroment that you are comfortable writing in, keep a notebook with you so that when a thought comes to mind you can write it down, bring a tape-recorder with you so that when you think of something that you can write about you can record it, collect quotes that inspire you to write, and lastly use favorite writing materials that give you a special urge to write.
6. The best way me to start my window to soul sculpture’s artist statement is to relax and create an enviroment that I can write and think in. I will think back and remember the process of creating the window to soul scuplture. That way I will regain the same inspiration I had while I was creating the piece of art back then.

Journal

As she walked into the room my eyes target her like a sniper. Not a single blink, like a staring contest. I like how she is dangerous. I like how people call her intimidating and frightening or whatever you like to call scary because I don’t see anything bad about it. She’s exciting and she’s fun. All the time spent with her is enjoyable. She might kick you between your thighs, pinch you like there’s no tomorrow, or whack you on the head. It is all good. It’s not really that she’s nice and kind to every single person including the people that she dislikes. It’s cool, her unique personality.

Band

I have learnt these scales from memory: C, F, G, and B flat

My favorite band piece this year is the midnight escape because I have this fast paced rhythm throughout the whole song. Our tenor saxophone section has the melody role throughout most of the song. I think that this is my favorite band piece so far. We are basically the base structure of the song. In this piece we are the base for a building so we have a pretty important and interesting part. The mixture of rhythms really bring out the feel of this song.

My final band goal for this quarter is to learn more jazz pieces because I enjoy playing jazz and listening to jazz. Also I’d like to learn all the blue scales.
