Artifact report – the reviving process of a middle-age sword

This project was too chose an artifact from the past and recreate it using clay. My artifact was a sword from around the 16th century. It was a hard process doing the research, most of the time I found swords in games or drawn by others. Going through googling, wikipedia and other websites. I found two pictures, one small, one large showing two different swords. I chose the smaller one since the it has a more simple design which makes it look like it is used by commoners rater than the large one which looked like a royal sword with a well designed handle. going on to the recreation process, it took quite a lot of me deciding the size when there is the size limit and the fact that it would decrease 20% in size. first i came down to a thin and weak looking handle so i gave it a wrap around with one more layer of clay. It turned out to be really thick and strong. Next I went on making the blade. It was probably the hardest part since balancing the size and the the length was a disaster. In the end the blade became bended. I tried to sharpen the edge but it really was a failure, the edge was still a bit flat. In the end it turned out to be okayDSC_0119.JPG

Down to the process, Scoring, leatherhard, greenware and slip. scoring a leatherhard and greenware was the part when scoring the handle to the blade. slip was used too.

Scoring – the process of joining two piece of clay

leatherhard – the level where the piece of clay is slightly hardened

greenware – totally fresh clay.
