CD Title: Beethoven: Piano Sonatas #3 & 8

Composer: Ludwig van Beethoven

Performing Artists: Claudia Arrau

About the Composer:

Ludwig van Beethoven is a German composer and pianist in the transitional period between the Classical and Romantic eras in the classical music in Europe. Beethoven is one of the most prestigious and influential composers of all time. Beethoven was born in Bonn on December 17, 1770. He moved to Vienna in his early twenties, and was taught by another great composer, Joseph Haydn. One of the most extraordinary things about this composer is that he became deaf in his late twenties; yet, he still was able to compose his greatest works and play as a pianist. He died on the 26th of March on the year 1827 in Vienna.

The pieces on this CD were very wonderful to listen to. The sound of Beethoven’s Piano Sonatas were different than the orchestra works I normally here from this legendary composer. He wonderfully mixes the different themes and sections of each movement. While sometimes you listen to the piano playing forte, quickly followed by a diminuendo and ritardando down to the quietist notes. Making it have a beautiful variety about it. Some parts of the sonatas make you relaxed, calm, while other are played with Staccato, making me feel way more tense and energized. I especially like the 4th song, Piano Sonata #3 In C, Op. 2/3 – 4. Allegro Assai, the piece is very beautiful, with long mezzo forte major scales winding up and down. And many tonic notes striking in unison. The phrasing by the pianist is absolutely amazing, with each note played crisp and clear. The tune is played in a medium tempo, making it neither too andante, nor too vivace for my liking. This is a wonderful CD and I would recommend everyone to listen to it. For those lucky enough to play the piano, they should definitely learn this wonderful piece of art.
