Reading Reflection

In the beginning of 6th grade, my independent reading consisted of only realistic fiction and fantasy books.

I see I have grown as a reader because I am noticing that I’m reading more books and getting more 100%s in AR lately.

Some challenges I face as a reader are reading different genres.

As a reader, I know I really need to read more (at least one) nonfiction book per month.

My AR goal for the fourth quarter is to get more than 100 points.

Writing Reflection:

In the beginning of 6th grade, my biggest challenge in writing was using less garbage words.  I used to get the two letters GW (Garbage Word)  all over my paper.

In writing, I’ve made the most progress in sentence fluency.  In fifth grade, most of my sentences use to always be all the same.  Now, I can write better and more meaningful sentences.

Some challenges that still remain are getting 100% in conventions when writing.  I always put an unnecessary comma, semicolon, period…  but I’m working on it, and I think I’m getting better.

As a writer, I know I still need a lot of practice to be the best I can be.  I still lack experience in many areas of writing, but feel I’m getting better anyhow.

Social Studies Reflection

My understanding of social studies has expanded, because now I feel like an expert about Mesopotamia.

Some skills that I have made improvements on are working with the application “Pages” on the Mac and making bibliographies on the website “Noodletools”.

Some skills that I still need work on are my note taking skills.  I tend to write down everything when taking notes.

My best work in social studies is the Dar essay I wrote because I got a 40/40.

What is School Good For?

13 02 2009

Have you ever wondered what school is good for?  I as a kid ask that to myself a lot. If you think really hard about it there are many reasons why school is good for you. Here are a couple reasons why I think school is good for you. Comment and tell me if you agree or disagree, or you could maybe help me come up with some more reasons why school is good for you and me.

1. Make friends.

2. Learn math, spelling, science, social studies, language arts and other subjects.

3. Prepare for your future by learning about responsibilities.

4. Read and write for enrichment and pleasure.

5. Learn to respect other people and all forms of life.  Be kind.

6. Keep you physically healthy and learn about different sports and games.

7. Develop creativity and love for music.

8. Learn to deal with different people while also learning about their culture and beliefs.

An Endangered Species Report on the Tree Octopus

10 11 2008

The Pacific Northwest Tree Octopus is an endagered specie but for some reason it isn’t on the Endagered Specie list.  In the rest of this post I will talk about where it lives,  what it looks like, why it’s endagered and some other important facts about it that you should know.

The highly endangered Octopus paxarbolis also known as the “Tree Octopus” is said to live in land and sea in the temperate rainforests of the Olympic Peninsula on the west coast of North America.  Their habitat lies on the Eastern side of the Olympic mountain range, adjacent (next to) to Hood Canal.  The rainforest there is a very moist and humid place that’s why they like it.

This”Tree Octopus” looks exactly like most octopus.  These octopuses are about (measured from arm-tip to mantle-tip,) of 30-33 cm in size.  “Tree Octopuses” have suction cup like tentacles that make it easy for the “Tree Octopus” to climb.  They also come in various colors.

Amazingly this “Tree Octopus” isn’t endangered because animals/people are eating them or because people are killing them.  It’s endagered because it has low breeding.

If you think this post about the ”Tree Octopus” was interesting, good for you.  If you also think this ”Tree Octopus” is a really fascinating animal then take a deep breath because this might upset and surprise you.    Well, here’s the life changing sentence about the ”Tree Octopus”, …… IT’S FAKE!!!  It really was an internet hoax in 1998 made by Lyle Zapato.  I think my teacher Mr. Hossack knows that because he made us (my class) write this post about “Tree Octopus”.  I think we’re going to learn about internet hoax for our next unit in the who knows what subject.  If you want to know more information about the ”Tree Octopus” please go on the following website:

Thank you for reading.  I hope that I have taught you the lesson of not believing everything on the computer.  Next time you find something odd on the internet check on another source or two.  If it says all the same information then believe that piece of information.
