After looking at the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, we looked at some words on Mr.Power’s blog that represented the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, or the articles on it. If you go to Mr.Power’s blog, you’ll see the post and 19 ‘articles‘ that Mr.Power simplified for us.

Today, my class and I had a big discussion about migrations. Part of this discussion included typing up a blog post.
When I looked at other people’s reason for migration I realized one thing most of us had in common, it was for our parent’s job. I’m really happy my dad got assigned here in Shanghai because I’m loving my life here.
Majority of the people in my class migrated from America. I was one of the few people who came from another place than America. A place that I call home and will always call home is the Philippines.
I think that because of this unit I’m starting to realize how unique our school is with people coming from different cultures and backgrounds.

I was born on a Sunday, August 16, 1998 at 5:44 a.m. at the Metropolitan Hospital in the Philippines. I lived most of my early childhood in the Philippines. At the young age of two and a half came an event that would change my life… FOREVER! The move to Shanghai. I didn’t really mind at all when I was young. I think my parents made the right decision moving to Shanghai, although I didn’t like it for some time.
At three years old I attended a local Chinese school because my parents wanted me to learn to speak in Chinese. The following year I joined an international kindergarten with a population that is still dominated by Chinese children. Although I struggled at first, I was left with no choice but to learn Chinese. These two years of being exposed with Chinese children earned me my Chinese speaking ability to these days. I was five years old when I came to SAS as a Kindergartener. Every summer and winter holidays, my family would go back to the Philippines. When it was the last week or so I would DREAD it. But now I don’t really care, I actually look forward to going back to Shanghai as I now consider it my HOME.
My parents lived nowhere else in the world than the Philippines. It must have been hard for them to be away from their own families but in the end it was all worth it because it means a brighter future for all of us.
The phenomenon looks like giant mole hills, or as I think of it from time to time, women’s breast. It reminds me of the hills in a small child’s drawing. All the hills are very uniform in shape.
I learned that after dry season the grass turns brown and that is where the hills got their name. I think that the hills must be the poop of the fat buddha who is always happy and wealthy. He probably buys lots of chocolate every wet season, eats it all up and has to poop it up when it comes to the dry season.
I think that the Buddha poops grass, because he doesn’t have any hair. He probably poops out all his hair. Poor Buddha! Although he poops all his hair, I think that he is laughing because of all his chocolate and he thinks it’s hilarious that he has no hair, it might be tickling his stomach in the inside.
Overall I did a very good job with my healthy meal project. I’m proud of the fact that my meal included a little bit of each food element. This is probably the project that has taught me most in all the projects I have done before. I learned a lot about vitamins and minerals, cooking tips, planning, chopping… I could go on forever… But two important lessons that I think will come in handy in the future is one, when stir frying you should always stir fry the garlic first followed by onion for better taste and second, when cooking vegetables you don’t overcook so that you don’t lose the nutrients of the vegetables.
The process of this project was long and challenging but worth it. It started off simple with the planning and shopping part but when it was the preparation and cooking part, I had a bit of trouble particularly working with the chicken. I didn’t feel at all comfortable doing anything with the chicken – touching it, chopping it, washing it, etc. But although that obstacle held me down I was still able to conquer it in the end. Having an experienced chef like my Mom, she demonstrated to me how to do it step by step. I was lucky enough to be serving two chickens, so while my Mom was doing one chicken, I was following with the other.
My favorite part of this project was definitely making the Lumpiang Shanghai. All the chopping, wrapping and frying were A LOT of work and fun. I think that by now I’m a real expert at making Lumpiang Shanghai. Best of all making the Lumpiang Shanghai took longer than the other dishes.
Unlike my other projects I actually scheduled all my mini deadlines, which worked like a charm. Next time I will consider creating mini deadlines for my future projects to get everything done on time without stressing myself out.
Although I started really early, I think I still could’ve started earlier. I cooked my meal very early but when it came to making the presentation I didn’t realize it would take me really long. I worked almost every other day on my presentation but I guess in the end I still haven’t given it enough time. With the lesson I learned about setting mini deadlines on a big project I think that next time I can do better at managing my time. In summary, I am still happy I did a FABULOUS job and gained a WONDERFUL experience in doing this project!
The other day, the whole 5th grade had a transition preview into the 6th grade. We met almost all of the teachers and learned about what they teach, and some of them even told us about some of the things that we’ll be doing next year. We went to all the classes namely, science room, math, humanities, art, music/drama, PE, and language class.
In science the teachers told us the things that we’d be studying next year, like plants and animals, the weather etc..
In math we were also told about what we are going to learn and the projects that we would be doing.
In humanities they made an introduction of middle school to us. They mentioned about the big trip that we call “China Alive”, where we go to a place in China and learn new things. That is one part of middle school next year that I’m really looking forward to.
The next place we went to was the art room. The art teacher, Ms. Thornberry (I think that’s how you spell her name) gave us a piece of paper with one small curve and one big curve and a circle. Then we had to make those shapes into a picture or a design. A lot of people did smiley faces, but I did something else that I forgot.
After that, we went to the music/drama class. We listened to the strings teacher and the two band teachers and the drama teacher give their speeches. After all of their speeches we played two games with the drama teacher. The first one was when we had to make animals with three people. The other game was for concentration. The teacher would tell you to do something, then she would tell you to freeze, and you would be in a funny position, but when the audience laughed you couldn’t. I could tell the people acting were really close to burst out laughing.
Then we went to language class and met all of the language teachers. There’s one french teacher, one spanish teacher and five chinese teachers. After they gave their introduction speeches to us we played GAMES like twister in french and telephone in chinese, etc with CANDY PRIZES.
The last thing we went to was P.E. There we played 4 way capture the flag. Because of my P.E. enthusiasm, I’m really looking forward to next year’s P.E.
Just before the preview I wasn’t so sure about 6th grade/middle school, but now I’m ready to give it my 110%!!!
Today, when I came back from school I tried the famous Diet Coke and Mentos experiment. I have to admit, it didn’t turn out as amazing as I expected it to be but it was still pretty cool!
I think that it didn’t turn out as cool as it could have been because I lack the equipment and knowledge. For one I don’t have the Mentos Geyser Tube that was created for that experiment. Another thing that I forgot to do was to drop the Mentos all at the same time. I dropped them in one by one and it only fizzed little by little. I believe that if I had known that, it would have been a whole lot better. So, lesson learned, drop all the Mentos in at the same time.
