What I Want the Student Council To Do For Me???

30 10 2008

I think the student council should suggest/request for a new jungle gym.  Our current jungle gym is good but after being on it for 6 1/4 years it gets really boring.  They should make a new set of playground courses every year or so.  I also think they should have more fun events namely, crazy hair day, backwards day, twin day, etc. so kids look forward to school.   I hope they also come up with more fun events on the BBQ on the weekends.  Field day or any sport event once a quarter would also be great!  Some kids get bored of the normal daily routine so I hope the student council succeeds in their plan to make school more fun for everyone.

Gravity

29 10 2008

Gravity is very important in our lives that if we didn’t have it, our life wouldn’t be the same at all.  In this post I’m going to tell you something about gravity.

Gravity is what holds us down.   Without gravity  I doubt I would even be able to type up  this post because I would float around everywhere even my computer.  Gravity involves all of us and almost anything sticking on the Earth’s surface. It involves us because it is the thing that keeps everything from flying into the air.  The only thing that will float are helium filled balloons because helium is lighter than air.  The person who we should all thank for this is Isaac Newton for the law of universal gravitation.  Some people don’t get what the difference is between gravity and gravitation so I’ll tell you.  Gravitation is a general term describing the phenomenon responsible for keeping the Earth and the other planets in their orbits around the Sun; for keeping the moon in its orbit around the Earth; for the formation of tides; for convection (by which hot fluids rise); for heating the interiors of forming stars and planets to very high temperatures; and for various other phenomena that we observe. “Gravity”, on the other hand, is described as the theoretical force responsible for the apparent attraction between a mass and the Earth.

And that’s mainly everything about gravity.  (My source is http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gravity)

My Imaginary Dinner

28 10 2008

For our homework tonight, we had to write a post on this question.  If you could invite five people living or dead to a dinner party, who would you invite and why would you invite them?  What would you talk with them about?  Here goes my answer:

Who I would invite:

My Grandfather on my Dad’s side:  I’ve never met him before.  I would ask him how my Dad was as a kid and how his childhood was.  Most importantly I would ask him what his name is and what I would call him(I still don’t know his name).  I would ask him about some fun moments they had together and just talk.

Jerry Spinelli:  I would invite Mr. Spinelli because he is a very famous author that I idolize a lot.  I would ask him if he was a genius at school, if he had a tough chilhood and ask him more about his childhood.  I would also ask him who was his best author friend and how many hours he had to work for that shiny medal to be on the book he wrote.

Bill Gates:  I would invite Bill Gates because he’s the richest person on earth.  I would definitely ask him how he got in control of Microsoft and what he has to do everyday (his daily routine) and how big his house is and how much money he has.  I might also ask him how much of everything he has (cars, house, maids, etc.)

Detroit Pistons basketball team with Flip Saunders:  I would invite this wonderful basketball team because basketball is my favorite sport and this is my favorite team.  They changed coach this season but I like the old coach better, Flip Saunders.  I would ask them about their training schedule and how much of their time they have to commit to basketball.  I would have to ask them if they could give me a couple of pointers.

My Whole Immediate Family:  I would invite my family so that they could also experience this wonderful event with me because meeting these kind of people doesn’t happen everday.  And I would want them to be there just in case I’m shy or nervous.

How to Comment

27 10 2008

I realize that some people who go on my blog don’t comment.  I’m not sure if it’s because they really just don’t want to comment or if they don’t know how to.  If you’re wondering how to post a comment I’ll tell you in this short post:

1. Go to a post you want to comment on and click on the very bottom where it says no comments, 1 comment, 2 comments and so on.

2. At the bottom of all the comments and the post itself it says leave a comment.  Information needed in order to comment are your names and e-mail adresses, urls are optional.  Then write the comment.  Please make the comment a good one.  A good comment has proper punctuation, tells me what I did good on, tells me what I need to work on and point out details in the post that they really liked.  You still have to write the spam word at the very bottom to post it.  That’s just to make sure my blog doesn’t carry a virus or something.

3. Last step is to post it.  You may have to wait a couple days or so but soon enough your comment will be on my blog.

THANKS FOR YOUR COMMENT!!!

My First Time Bowling – EVER!!!

27 10 2008

Yesterday, I went to Kate’s birthday party.  There were nine of us including Kate.  We went to a bowling alley someplace close to Jin Qiao.  I had a really fun time there!  At first I was doing really good and hitting lots of pins but when it was coming close to the end I was getting worse and… worst.  I started to lose focus and I did really bad.  At the last game I only hit four pins in all.  I just kept on getting gutter balls.  The balls were so heavy, especially the purple ones that were size 12.  Some of the balls were so huge I couldn’t even lift them.   After  bowling, we went to Johnny Moo’s to have lunch.  We had a great time!

Maniac Magee Book Report

27 10 2008

Maniac Magee starts out in a place called Bridgeport. Jeffrey Lionel Magee used to have a normal life until the day his parents died in a car accident and rendered him an orphan. During the next eight years, Jeffrey lives with his Aunt Dot and Uncle Dan in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania. They dislike each other but, being strict Catholics, refused to divorce. After being literally split into two by his aunt and uncle, Jeffrey reaches the point where he can’t stand it anymore, he runs away. Jeffrey begins his search for a new home. He ran 200 miles for a year and eventually ends up in Two Mills, a town linked to Bridgeport. The first day he is in Two Mills, he makes several appearances. First, he speaks to a black girl named Amanda Beale. Amanda has a suitcase that he discovers is full of books. He borrows a book from her and promises to return it.

He makes several life changing scenes that day. Whenever anyone sees Jeffrey, he is running. He shows up at a football field, saves a boy in a “dangerous” house, eats in a house with 10 kids and bats in a baseball game. Stories begin to be made and he gets the nickname “Maniac Magee” because of all the amazing things he has done in the short time he has been in Two Mills.

Maniac soon realizes that Two Mills is separated into two parts—the East End is where the black people live and the West End is where the white people live, and the street down the middle is Hector Street. That day, he was chased by a bully, John McNab and his friends, the Cobras, then he runs into another bully named Mars Bars until he is saved by Amanda. After Amanda’s parents find out his home is the deer shed at the zoo, the Beales invites him to stay with them. After a year of running, he finally has a home with an address. Maniac is satisfied with his life. He fits in with the Beales just like he was born there but he does not notice the differences between the blacks and whites in this town, until the day an old black man calls him Whitey and tells him to go home. A couple days later when he realizes that staying at the Beales house was hurting them, Maniac runs away again.

Maniac is found, hungry, scraped up and dirty in the buffalo pen at the zoo by an old man named Grayson. Grayson takes him to the baseball equipment room in the band shell. He take cares of Maniac and lets him stay in the baseball room. Soon Grayson loves Maniac like a how a father would love his son and Maniac loves him back the same way. Maniac and Grayson are contented together and once again, Maniac has a home. Unfortunately five days after Christmas, Grayson dies in his sleep. Maniac is all alone again. To deal with his loneliness, Maniac runs away.

Miserable and lost, Maniac ends up at Valley Forge where he decides to die. He decides not to live with anyone else. The second night Maniac is there in a small cabin, two small boys show up, Piper and Russell McNab, brothers of big and mean John McNab. The young boys were running away from home. Maniac takes the boys back to the McNab house and ends up staying there. The house is dirty and messy. Maniac performs random sets of task to make Piper and Russell go to school. At the McNab house, the Cobras (John McNab’s group of friends) are building what they call a “pillbox” in the middle of the living room. The “pillbox” is a fort to protect themselves against blacks. John imagines blacks from the East End attacking the West End in the summer. The idea of the fortress against the black people makes Maniac feel prejudicial. Maniac leaves the McNabs, choosing to sleep in the park. He couldn’t stand what the McNabs were doing or the way they were thinking against the blacks.

After several encounters, Maniac and Mars Bar begin to run together in the mornings and learn to understand each other. In his own queer way, Maniac unites the blacks and whites to become one. Mars Bar and Amanda find Maniac in the buffalo pen at the zoo and force him to come home. Maniac says yes and finally feels that he has a place he can call home.

I think the book Maniac Magee is a great book with unique characters such as my favorite character, Amanda Beale. I like Amanda because she is not prejudicial and is helpful and kind. She understands Maniac and becomes a good friend by offering her house and family. Maniac also makes a strong influence on several characters in the book. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to read an exciting realistic fiction book. I think the author Jerry Spinelli did a really good job explaining something about prejudice which was the main theme of the book. At the same time, the author made the book very enjoyable to read. I really had fun reading Maniac Magee. In fact, this is one of the best books I’ve ever read. Overall on a scale of one to ten on how good this book was, I would rate it a 9.

Free Rice

24 10 2008

www.freerice.com is a fun educational game. The website gives you a word and you tell them the definition. The best part of all of that is for every right meaning you get you donate 20 grains of rice to the UN World Food Program to help end hunger. By playing this game you’ll be helping other people to eat and at the same time feed your brain with vocabulary words. There are also levels.  The more words you guess right the harder your level gets (the first level is pretty hard). Usually I play on this website about twice a week and donate at least 2000 grains of rice.  I really recommend anyone who has time to go on this website and help other kids just like you live a fun healthy life. I have that link on my blog.

Fun Math Games

22 10 2008

I was surfing the web tonight and I found a really fun game called baseball multiplication.  You can find this game on very many websites but I prefer playing it on funbrain (not that it makes a difference on playing the game) but only because  you can go on other fun math games on this website.  Baseball multiplication actually doesn’t just test your multiplication skills.  It also tests your division, subtraction and addition skills.  The thing that I also like about funbrain is you get to pick your skill level - easy, medium or hard and usually I pick hard.  You can also pick if you want it to be algebra style or not.  How to play the game is really simple.  All you have to do is answer the math question, if you get it right you get to run a base if you get it wrong it’s an out.  If reading this post has made you want to play this game you may click on the link on my side bar that says Funbrain- Baseball Math.

What I Think About My Personal Narrative

16 10 2008

This is a short review of what I think about my personal narrative.

True/False        I have focused my writing on one small moment.

TRUE:                The focus of my writing is basically about my drowning experience.

True/False        I have written in paragraphs.

TRUE:                My writing has several paragraphs and I discussed one topic in each paragraph.

True/False        I begin a new paragraph when the speaker changes.

TRUE:                I only have one dialogue at the beginning of my story.

True/False        My story follows a logical sequence.

TRUE:                My story only has a beginning, middle, and ending paragraphs.

True/False        My opening sentence is a strong lead.

TRUE:                 Personally I think it’s a catchy lead.

True/False        My sentences start in different ways (not always with the same words).

TRUE:                I have reviewed my story several times.

True/False        I have made quality word choices and used precise language to make my story clear.

TRUE:                I have used the thesaurus to look for juicy words to express what happened in the narrative.

True/False        I reread my work to make sure that it has correct spelling, grammar, verb tense, and punctuation.

TRUE:                I have spell checked it on Microsoft Word and have had four people look at it and make changes.

Overall I think between a 1-4 scale 1 being the lowest,I deserve a 3.5 because I know there can still be improvements but I have spent long hours writing it  and I was able to answer all the questions truthfully.
