Science Field Trip Reflection

Last Tuesday, we went on a field trip to gather water samples from the nearby village for testing water quality. We all rode bikes since we wanted to environmentally friendly. We took water samples and temperatures from various sites near the school. However, it took longer than expected so we were late for our next class. It was quite fun though.

What is the main conflict in the book and how is it resolved?  Include specific examples.

The main conflict in the book is that a very powerful and evil necromancer, Sauron really wants a magic ring, that using it, he will be able to take over all of Middle-Earth. If you’re not evil and using it, you will turn evil. So Frodo goes into Mordor adn destroys the magic ring by throwing it into lava, and he barely escapes alive.

Kepler Writing

Why do you think the Kepler Mission is important?

The Kepler mission is the first of its kind. The first space mission where the whole point is finding/discovering undiscovered earth-like planets in solar systems where there might be life. For years and years we have purposely sent (even more not purposely) radio signals into the cosmos in order alert hopefully alien races to our presence, who might send back signals or visit our planet. All ( or most) of us humans have always been hoping that we aren’t the only ones in the Universe. I mean, the Universe is huge, and huge would still be a gross understatement. In all these planets in the near infinite number of galaxies, there has got to be at least one other planet with life.

“It is said that the Hornburg has never fallen to assault” shows Theoden saying that the Hornburg is a safe place, but while he said that they were being attacked by an endless ocean of orcs. It shows Theoden’s hope that the Hornburg will hold against the attack.

“The White Rider was upon them, and the terror of his coming filled the enemy with madness.” shows that Gandalf was indeed a great power. Especially if the mere sight of him could give enemy armies despair and friendly armies much hope. Without him most of the Fellowship would have died a horrible death.

My Reinvention

This project is to draw/paint/make a reinvention of a painting that was made at least a century ago. In my case, it is a reinvention of Grant Wood’s painting “Stone City”.

The viewer is looking at a painting of Stone City, a real place. It was an art colony founded by Grant Wood himself.

Thinking of the modern world influenced/inspired me to reinvent the painting the way I did. I thought of the Manhattan skyline, and that is what I was thinking when I drew the skyline. I also thought of the world today trying to use more renewable energy, so I drew windmills and nuclear power plants. I know to some people nuclear power isn’t renewable, but it is still pretty clean.

The best part of the project was the reinvention part, since I let my imagination run wild. The most difficult thing was probably the painting itself, which took a long time. I like the project the way it is now, and don’t have any ideas on how it could be changed.

The Lord of The Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring

What is a theme of the book?  How do you know?  (A theme is a principle that applies to all humans, such as:  learning independence, enduring friendship, making choices, survival, values/morals, courage, persistence, etc.)

I can’t really decide which theme this book has. In my opinion it has several. Enduring friendship, making choices, and survival. Enduring friendship because if Frodo didn’t have the help of his friends,  it woud have taken a much longer time for him to destroy the Ring (a.k.a the One Ring or Master Ring). Making choices because he had to make choices that could change the future of nations and himself. And survival because the book is set in a dangerous setting and he has to fight to survive.

Journey Enduring Understanding

The Enduring Understanding that us humans are always continually in search of new knowledge is quite true. Why did Columbus travel to the New World? In hopes that he could find a new trade route to the East Indies. Why do many countries seek the knowledge to build nuclear weapons? Because it could potentially make them very powerful. There is a saying- “knowledge is power”, which is usually true.

Would you recommend this book to a friend?  Why or why not?  (To be done after completion of a book.)

 

I would definitely recommend this book to a friend. That is, if that friend hasn’t read it yet. Almost everybody I know has read this book, which sort of says its good already. The book is the prelude to the bestselling triology “Lord of the Rings”, so it contains the same feeling of excitement, tension, etc. It is also sort of epic, just like the triology.  The storyline is also very engaging, especially for those that love to read fiction that has dragons, elves, dwarves, magic, you know.If after reading this book, and you like it, the Lord of The Rings will be even better.
