3. Choose one of the unit’s Enduring Understandings and explain how it is exemplified through the text.

Social change begins with an individual or small group.

Remember The Titans is a film about an African American coach called Coach Henry Boone (Denzel Washington) and a white coach called Bill Yoast (Will Patton) who raise a team of white and black players that overcome their racial problems between each other. In the beginning of the movie, Coach Boone takes over Coach Yoast’s position as head coach for T.C. Williams High School. Coach Boone offers Coach Yoast a position as assistant head coach, but he turns down the offer. Later on, he accepts the offer because the white players wouldn’t play for Coach Boone. As racial-motivated conflicts began to occur, Coach Boone forces them to work together as a team and disciplines them. For example, anyone who displays misconduct has to run a mile as a consequence. One time, Coach Boone even woke his players up at 3:00 AM in the morning to run through the woods to a Civil War battleground and he gave a very persuasive speech why the Civil War was fought and relates it to the same fight we still have today (racial discrimination). After Coach Boone’s strenuous efforts to make the black and white football players of the team to cooperate, he not only made them change about how they thought of black and white people, he also changed how the community thought of black and white people and they ended up supporting the Titans throughout the whole season. Coach Boone and Yoast also learn from the team. So you see, social change begins with an individual or a small group, then it spreads out. Like some people say, one person can make great change. In the end, the Titans stay undefeated throughout their season and they win the  AAA State Championship game.
