Immigration “The Orphan of Ellis Island” reader’s letter
Dear Ms. Campbell,
I finished reading the book “The Orphan of Ellis Island”. It is about an orphan kid named Domenic Cantori who goes back in time to a city called Avaletto. When he meets these three orphan kids, named Francesco, Salvatore and Antonio, they go on an exciting and strange experience. He finds out where he’s from and who his ancestors are, the three kids!
I made a text to text connection on the whole book because Domenic is an orphan who doesn’t know where he’s from just like a kid named Otto in a book I read called H.I.V.E. They both go on a journey to see where they came from and meet unexpected people.
I liked this book a lot because it has such an interesting plot. My favorite part was when he sees the gold key around Salvatore’s neck. The saddest part was when Salvatore died because it had such good description it made you think you were there.
From,
Evan
Dear Evan,
Thanks for your letter about the Orphan of Ellis Island. It’s interesting that you have read 2 books with the same interesting plot, but it’s not quite clear to me if in the book HIVE the character Otto goes back in time as well. You could have explained this part a bit more.
Although it was sad that Salvatore died, I’m sure this was very true to the experience of being an immigrant. I wonder how many people died on the journey over to the USA with hopes of a better life.
Curiously,
Ms. Campbell
