Culture Is Like An Iceberg

Today, in class, we learned about culture. we learned about how some things are under the water, something no one sees, and the things people see.

So the visible part of the iceberg includes the clothes, the language, and the money.

The invisible part of the iceberg is the education, the way people in a culture value the education, for example, in some cultures, girls aren’t supposed to go to school, they’re suposed to sew at home, learn how †ø cook at tidy up the house; The government secrets, is another one, because sometimes they are ashamed of what they’ve done, and they try to cover things up by not running the story on the papers, and by not telling anyone. Sometimes, they have manners that is different from other countries, sometimes it’s hard to see. For example, in some places it’s considered rude if you look a person from the generation above you in the eye.

What 5th Grade in 5TB is like

Hi, I’m Charlotte, and I was in the 5th Grade, but 5th Grade is HARD!!! First of all future 5th Graders, 5th Grade is totally AWESOME. 5th Grade is the time where you get to be the big cheese, the king/queen of the school. All the little kids bow down to you, and they think or say “Wow, one day, I want to be just like them.” You know, that kind of things.

In 5TB, we do everything 4th Grade does, but it’s much harder and the topics are a little different. We do Math, Reading, Writing, Social Studies, Science, Art, P.E, L.L.B etc.

In Math, we do volume, harder volume, area, harder area, factions, more fractions, PEMDAS(if you have no clue what PEMDAS is, you’ll find out more in 5th Grade.) We do REALLY hard Math, I would recommend you guys or gals study and pay attention in class.

In reading, you know, we just read and we also do read aloud. It’s kind of like in 4th Grade, but the teacher is different and maybe the way they say it is different. I say, reading is really fun and for the most part, easy.

Writing, is super fun. We do some personal narratives(if you don’t know, you’ll learn this in class), 3 types of essays (I’m not telling because that’ll just spoil Writing), Memoirs (again, if you don’t know what is a memoir… I’m not telling!) etc. This year, writing is really awesome, we really get to use personification, similes, metaphors, and the teacher will give you some tips, so would your classmates.

Social Studies this year, we learn about social issues, we have debates and we do culture studies. It’s a TON of fun and really interesting. This year in Science… we do a cooking unit, the cooking you do and the presentation is counted as part of you’re grade. We also did a LEGO unit. That’s right, LEGO. We did them in workbooks, and the LEGO we get aren’t boy-LEGO’S or girl-LEGO’S. It’s a heap of fun.

What you need to know is in 5th Grade, we have Eagle Leaders. If you were here and you remember the Dodgeball Tournament, that was organized by the 5th Grade. We go on field trips to SAS PX, and SAS PX Eagle Leaders come to our campus too. I can say in first hand, BEING AN EAGLE LEADER ROCKS, but being a Eagle Leader means you have to sacrifice you’re recess time, be responsible and you have to sign-up, and being an Eagle Leader is hard, because there are only limited spaces, you have to fill out a form, it’s not first-come-first-serve, it’s who-is-responsible-in-all-classes-and-follows-the-rules.

It’s just too bad, because Ms. Bui the teacher of 5TB is going to the 7th Grade, Mrs. Power the teacher of 5KP is moving to the library, but the other teachers, Mrs. Recate, Ms. Williams, Mr. Martin, Mr. Neil are all AWESOME!!! GOOD LUCK IN 5TH GRADE, JUST REMEMBER, ALL THE LITTLE KIDS LOOK UP TO YOU!!!

I FEEL SO MAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OMG, I swear, someone has got to stop this. I mean it! So this morning, our neighbor rebuilds their parking lot, the one right next to ours. So, at 9:00 am, they start flinging their ugly rocks at our car. The one that’s new, and is super awesome. So my mom sees this and she says, “Excuse me? Can you guys please stop flinging your rocks at my car?” And they IGNORE my mom! I mean, how dare they! Then, at around 12:00, they start drilling holes in the ground, causing a really annoying noise and a lot of rocks flinging in our parking lot and our yard. Then my mom went to lunch outside, and parked her car outside, on the street!!! Then, about 1 hour before I came home from Girl Scouts, they busted our fence! They pushed our fence right down, it was falling. So suppose our family car was there, then it would have been RUINED! So then, my mom called the guy in charge of all this mess, and they said they’ll repair it, but all they did was push it together, not nailing it so it’s perfect and safe. My mom, and sister ran out yelling at them, until finally the real person in charge of all this mess comes out, and she said, “Men, please fix their fence” And they all chorused, “We did. See?” But all they did was PUSH IT, NOT NAIL IT DOWN OR ANYTHING!!! The head person knew all of this, and yelled at them. She said they HAVE TO NAIL IT TOGETHER OR THEY’RE NOT ALLOWED TO EVER DO THIS PROJECT EVER AGAIN. They went right to work, but they’re annoying me so much. I just feel like lining them all up, and yelling at them, and doing annoying things at their faces, because now, I can’t even write a blog post without feeling like yelling at them.

Eagle Leaders Reatreat

So remember way back in the beginning of the school year where I posted about the Eagle Leader retreat? Well, this time SAS PD went to SAS PX. It was really fun, we laughed, SAS PD even got a tour of SAS PX. I saw some of my old friends from SAS PD that transferred to PX, it was really great. I had a blast.

Track And Field Day

Yesterday, we had TAFD, (Track And Field Day). SAS PX, YCIS, BISS and other schools came to our campus for TAFD. TAFD is a day where we have fun and do fun activities and make friends, or reunite friends who’ve transferred to other schools. I reunited with a lot of kids from SAS PX. I wasn’t expecting so much, just 3~5 people, but boy was I wrong. I hung out with Ashley(from SAS PX), Mimi (from my school) and Sheung Yee (from my school). I mostly hung out with them because some of my friends were really sick. I was really sad for them because I knew they all really wanted to go to TAFD.

My favorite time was when we were playing around and joking around, meeting new people and meeting some EG’s (eagle leaders) from SAS PX. I really had a fun time yesterday with my friends who transferred and with my friends who just came to SAS PD. I hope everyone who had TAFD had just as much fun as I did!

Memoirs

I’ve been reading memoirs for the school in reading. I’ve finished the book My Thirteenth Winter, and I’m reading When My Name Was Keoko the book is about a girl who has this learning disability called dyscalculia. In this memoir book, it talks about her suffering from this disability, and not realizing it until she was 13 years old.

I find it really sad that she suffered for so long, and for her, her only escape from everyone moving on to harder levels of math was writing. She discovered writing, and I thought that was really cool how she discovered writing. I feel really bad Screen shot 2012-04-17 at 8.56.55 PMfor Samantha, because she couldn’t count change for a bus stop, she couldn’t add mentally easy addition problems in her head, she couldn’t tell time, and so on. I find it really interesting how she survived, and how she figured everything out. In ways, she’s really smart in a different and weird way. I think her parents were really supportive, and they helped her struggle through her everyday life. Before I read this book, I thought a learning disability was just not learning as fast as the regular kids, just slower and needed more practice. What made me wonder was how she managed to pass the 5th Grade if she couldn’t even add and subtract simple two-digit numbers mentally like 10+20. I was shocked in how hard her life was compared to mine. In ways I could relate to her, because I was really bad at the times tables when I was in the 3rd Grade, I knew how she felt everyday, all the kids staring and pointing, giving me the What? You can’t do your times tables up to 9 yet? I struggled, but I managed to conquer it. I feel really happy for Samantha because she finally told the world her troubles through a different way, but she was brave and she told everyone what she was suffering.

One Day Without Shoes (continued)

Today of all days was ODWS!!! I had a really fun time planning this event, and paring up and doing everything. It was really a incredible day. It was wonderful and awesome and cool all at the same time. It was so fun going to school seeing so many bare feet. When some kids wanted to wear their shoes to the bathroom, our class made a joke, asking ‘why, is the bathroom filled with urine, and if go in barefoot you’ll step into weird stinky urine?’ ODWS was so fun, I’m still doing it at home. I can’t imagine going on hot pavement, but I can imagine going on the playground barefoot. ODWS was a big success, and everything turned out great.

St. Patrick Day

Hey people of the planet! It’s St. Patrick’s Day… that means… if you aren’t wearing green, WATCH OUT and stay home.

I’m having an awesome St. Patrick Day. Hope everyone is having a really nice St. Patricks Day.

Friday

I know I’m writing this post on Saturday, because on Friday I have the time of my life! It was truly awesome. First, it was all work, and I didn’t exactly get 100% on my Math test. It kinda bummed me out a bit, but after Art, we went outside. Yes, not because of a field trip, but because we were so good, and it was so we could play one the playground. We were outside for the most of it, then about I think a little later during the period later, we all went inside. To dance, I mean limbo in the classroom. Yes, limbo, you read it correct. It was really awesome. We spent the rest of the time eating popcorn and cookies made by Wade’s mom (the cookies where really out of this world good.) and having an awesome party.

Do you ever do that in class? I haven’t done anything like that until yesterday, it was EPIC!
