35. To find 80% of 130, a student set up the proportion 80/100 = 130/x. Explain the error. Write the correct proportion, and find the missing value.

When you are finding the percentage of a number, the proportion should be: part/whole = part/whole. For example, 80% is a part of the whole 100%, therefore, 80 would be the numerator and 100 would be the denominator. In this problem, we are finding 80% of 130. This particular student put 130 as the numerator, even though 130 is the whole. The correct place to put 130 would be the denominator. In conclusion, the correct proportion would be 80/100 = x/130 — x=104

Musical Dream ~

1.  Describe the dream house project.

This project was basically about using our creativity to design our dream house. But we also had to apply one-point perspective, and a monochromatic color scheme. First, we began thinking of ideas, while using that to draw a rough sketch of our thoughts for our house. After that, we moved on to the big paper, and added the vanishing point, orthogonal lines and more features to create a perfect dream house! (:

2.  What was the inspiration behind your dream house design?

Well, to design our house, we had to think about 5 features or ideas our dream house would include. I personally wanted it to have black, a slide, a ball pit, a pool, and related to music. My inspiration was…myself! Because this represents who I am, and what I like. (but I’m NOT emo.)
3.  If you could build your dream house anywhere in world, where would you build it? Why?

Actually, I haven’t been to many places around the world. But knowing where I HAVE been, I would want my dream house built right where i grew up, Pennsylvania! This is because I’ve lived most of my life here, and I’m used to the life style. Also, I would feel right at home in my comfortable dream house. (:

God/Goddess Reasearch ~

Name: Mut (also spelled “Mout”)

Goddess of Heaven and Pharoahs. [Lady of Heaven, Mother of Pharaohs]

-Responsibilities- Mut was the queen of all gods. She was the female counterpart of Amun. Mut also took over the goddesses that were realted with motherhood.

-Symbols- Double Crown, Vulture, Cobra, Lioness, Queen

-Appearance-

Some depictions of Mut showed her as a woman with the heads of a man, a woman, and a vulture, with a phallus, the claws of a lion, and wings. Later she appeared as a cow, cat, cobra, or lioness. Mut was also depicted as a woman standing with stretched out arms, with a large pair of wings. There is also a feather of Ma’at at her feet.

-Related Mythology-

Mut’s name means “mother” or “one who dives birth” although, according to myth, she was self-created. She was said to be the consort of Amun, and their son was the moon-god Khonsu. A myth in Heliopolis said she was once to have changed from goddess of the sky into a cow. XD

Math Question: Ratios

Why is the ratio 2:5 different than 5:2?

Firstly, think of ratios as fractions. If you make both ratios fractions…

2:5 —-> 2/5

5:2 —-> 5/2

then you can clearly see and understand that 2/5 and 5/2 are not equivalent, therefore the ratio 2:5 is different than 5:2!

Ramose Acrostic(:

This is an acrostic poem we had to do in Humanities class based upon <<Ramose and the Tomb Robbers>>.

Running away from Queen Mutnofret,

A clever prince Ramose lives to escape her awful wrath.

Months of hiding, masked as an apprentice scribe,

One day a disastrous flood interrupted the lavish lunch of the tomb worker tribe.

Sadly, the tomb was destroyed in the chaos of the flood,

Everybody had to find a fresh start in Tombos, a city with many bricks made out of mud.

Though leaving the family will make the workers feel blue, Ramose and his friends have a mischievous plan to follow through

Hapu, a dear friend of Ramose is an apprentice painter. Then there is Karoya, a slave, but also a hard worker.

Early morning, away they go, boarding a boat to Memphis, for a tedious journey awaits the trio.

Passed through villages, moored the boat, and paid more gold, the expedition was long and dreary.Hapu, Ramose, and Karoya are stranded in a town called Hardai, since Ramose refused to pay money for the transportation scornfully

Hardai was an unusual place, for as they were sniveling about their misfortune, a strange threesome invited them to join their trip. Ramose and his friends gladly accepted, although the boatmen smiled grimly, they decided to accompany them on their ship.

At night Ramose was kidnapped by the hosts who surprisingly turned out to be tomb robbers. He winced and felt quite dumb for falling in to their trap, even though they were pretty good actors.

Rather scared than tired, Ramose was forced to help the thieves rob a pyramid with only a scroll to advise him. Indeed, marvelous treasures were found, as Ramose descended from the chamber that was ever so dim.

All the same, the young prince discovered that Hapu was also kidnapped. Once again, the robbers held another tomb robbing session, maybe this time they could outsmart them perhaps.

Oh no! The two acquaintances are trapped alone in a room. But soon Mery, the cat emerges to guide them away from their doom.

Hapu, Karoya, and Ramose reunite as they manage to fight of an accusation, travel quickly across the nation, and continue to unravel the mysteries of the life of Egyptians!

Math Question #8

Can a square be a rectangle, a rhombus, a quadrilateral, a parallelogram and a regular polygon? Explain each case.

Features of each shape:

Square:

  • Parallelogram
  • 4 congruent sides
  • 4 right angles

Rectangle:

  • Parallelogram
  • 4 right angles

Quadrilateral:

  • Polygon
  • Four sides

Parallelogram:

  • Quadrilateral
  • Both pairs of opposite sides are parallel

Regular Polygon:

  • All sides are congruent
  • All angles are congruent

Can a square be a rectangle? Yes, because a square has all the features a rectangle has: It is a parallelogram, and both have 4 right angles.

Can a square be a quadrilateral? Yes, because a square has all the features a quadrilateral has: It is a polygon, and a square has 4 sides.

Can a square be a parallelogram? Yes, because a square has all the features a parallelogram has: It is a quadrilateral, and both pairs of opposite sides are parallel.

Can a square be a regular polygon? Yes, because a square has all the features a regular polygon has: It has congruent sides, and congruent angles [90 degrees]

24. The rectangle and the parallelogram at the right have the same perimeter. Why is the area of the rectangle greater than the area of the parallelogram?

To start of with, perimeter and area are not the same term, nor is a rectangle and a parallelogram the same. Perimeter is the distance around a shape, while the area is the number of square units a shape encloses. A rectangle and a parallelogram have different base and heights (which is used to find the area.) Therefore, the area will be different.

Dar Essay & Reflection

In this essay, I had to pretend I was Dar, while writing a letter to Toreg after I had returned to Dar’s “clan”

Dear Toreg,

I have reached my clan safely and have encountered many new events which created a stronger relationship within our clan. For instance, seeing Mora’s face when I told her that her beloved brother, Seelan was still alive was a moment to remember. Her overwhelmed shock was replaced by a warm, irrepressible smile. These days she is happier and joyful knowing her brother is safe and alive.

Secondly, since my return, my relationship with Kenok is completely different. As I confronted him while traveling back to the camp, we discussed, and I discovered that Kenok cares and acts like a second father to me. We both realized that we have many connections, and that my father was very special to us. Because of this we understand each other’s perspectives. Although we still have our differences, the solid bond between us makes me proud to call him my uncle!

Finally, thanks to you, we are very fortunate to have a spear thrower. When the hunters in my clan witnessed the spear-thrower in action, they were amazed at the speed and accuracy of the handy tool. They even asked me to make them one! As a result, we now can make accurate throws and attacks without getting close to the animal. We all are now becoming well-trained and skilled hunters!

All in all, everything is going well. Our clan is once again a happy group/family. Of course, most of our fortune is thanks to you and your fellow clan. You have welcomed me and provided me shelter and food throughout the past days I’ve spent with your wonderful clan. Thank you for that and the ways you’ve help supported our tribe. May peace be with you and your family.

Sincerely,

Dar

~REFLECTION

1.  I’m really content with my Dar essay because…

2.  The most successful/easiest aspect of writing the Dar essay was…the organization, since we had a graphic organizer.

3.  The most difficult aspect of writing the Dar essay was…sentence fluency.

4.  The Six Trait that was easiest for me was (choose one):  Ideas, Organization, Voice, Word Choice, Sentence Fluency, Conventions

5. The Six Trait that I need to work on more in the the future is…Sentence Fluency and Word Choice.

Humanities Reflections

WRITING REFLECTION~

In the beginning of 6th grade, my challenges in writing were…working on my sentence fluency, conventions, and word choice, because I had trouble using descriptive words and grammar.

In writing, I’ve made the most progress in…. conventions and sentence fluency since we’ve done a lot of work on these traits, because at one point of the year, we studied sentence fluency, and we always learn grammar and vocabulary.

Some challenges that still remain are…word choice. Also, I need to have to be able to “show” not “tell” so the reader can visualize my writing.

As a writer, I know I….am improving on my writing skills, for I’ve had a lot of good pieces of writing.

READING REFLECTION~

In the beginning of 6th grade, my independent reading consisted of… fantasy, realistic fiction.

I see I have grown as a reader by… reading more complex books that have difficult concepts and words.

As a reader, I know I…. am good at taking AR quizzes, and I can improve by reading more genres.

My AR goal for the fourth quarter is…. to read more genres, since usually I only read fiction.

SOCIAL STUDIES REFLECTION~

My understanding of social studies has grown/expanded…. since we’ve learned about archaeology, early man, and Mesopotamia

Some skills that I have made improvements on are… I have more note taking skills from Noodle Tools. Also, I’ve become better at reading and interpreting graphs, pictures, maps, interpretation and comparing of fiction text (eg. Dar, Clay Marble) to historic events/time periods, using different programs such as Keynote, Pages, Word, Powerpoint, etc.

Some skills that I still need work on are…. my research skills, I have to be more detailed and specific.

My best work in social studies is….. my Clay Marble test.

PE/Health Reflections

Physical Education:

My 3rd quarter SMART goal: My goal is to improve on my push-ups from 24 to at least 30, (which is 100% ) by the Quarter 3 push-up test.  To accomplish this, I will practice every other day, trying to do as many as I can. Sometimes, I may also split up my practicing, for example, doing 10 when I come home from school, and 10 after I finish my homework. If I achieve my push-up goal, my mom will award me with money :D [Goal Accomplished]

My 2nd quarter SMART goal: My goal is to improve my sit-ups from 32 t o at least 37 by the December fitness test. Every other day, I will practice my sit-ups for 10 minutes, but as I get better, I will practice every day. If I improve, my mom agreed to buy ,me some new clothes. [Goal Accomplished]

Floor Hockey: I’ve never really played this sport, so I learned a lot about it such as, the different parts of the hockey stick, how to stick handle, etc. One of my challenges was trying not to swing the stick up too high.

Table Tennis: In this unit, I haven’t learned as much as floor hockey, but I have adapted some knowledge such as learning how to serve properly. One of my challenges was trying to make the ball hit the other side, to win a point.

Swimming: I was not here for this unit.

Fitness games: During this unit, we mainly did some dodge ball, and other games. In some of the partner games, I learned how to work together so we could score more points. I was challenged when our team for this one game had to work together to get the balls in the box.

Health Education:

Internet Safety: I think this unit was very helpful, because now I know the risks and how to stay safe on the Internet.

Personal Hygiene: When I did my research for my presentation, I actually learned a lot about hygiene just by reading through the articles. I now know some major tips on how to take care of my hair, teeth, nails, ears, eyes, and skin. One of my challenges was trying to make my powerpint creative and explanatory.
